1. What is ipconfig?

ipconfig is a Windows command-line tool used to:

• Display your current IP configuration.

• Show subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers.

• Release and renew IP addresses if using DHCP.

• Troubleshoot network connectivity issues.

2. How to open it

1. Press Windows + R, type cmd, and press Enter.

2. In the Command Prompt, type:

• IPv4 Address – your device’s IP on the network

• Subnet Mask – defines your local network range

• Default Gateway – where traffic leaves your local network

3. Show detailed info

This gives:

• MAC address (Physical Address)

• DHCP status

• DNS servers

• Lease information

4. Release and renew IP (DHCP)

Sometimes your IP is wrong or conflicts with another device.

• Release IP:

ipconfig /release

• Renew IP:

ipconfig /renew

5. Practical Scenario:

• PC can’t connect to the internet → ipconfig /release → ipconfig /renew → checks if the DHCP server gives a new IP.

6. Flush DNS Cache

Sometimes DNS resolves incorrectly. Use:

ipconfig /flushdns

• Clears cached DNS entries

• Forces your computer to query the DNS server again
