ipconfig Command

1. What is ipconfig?
ipconfig?ipconfig is a Windows command-line tool used to:
Display your current IP configuration.
Show subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers.
Release and renew IP addresses if using DHCP.
Troubleshoot network connectivity issues.
2. How to open it
Press Windows + R, type
cmd, and press Enter.In the Command Prompt, type:
C:\>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration
Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::298e:fec6:a21f:8a40%38
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.244
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
C:\>IPv4 Address – your device’s IP on the network
Subnet Mask – defines your local network range
Default Gateway – where traffic leaves your local network
3. Show detailed info
This gives:
MAC address (Physical Address)
DHCP status
DNS servers
Lease information
4. Release and renew IP (DHCP)
Sometimes your IP is wrong or conflicts with another device.
Release IP:
Renew IP:
5. Practical Scenario:
PC can’t connect to the internet →
ipconfig /release→ipconfig /renew→ checks if the DHCP server gives a new IP.
6. Flush DNS Cache
Sometimes DNS resolves incorrectly. Use:
Clears cached DNS entries
Forces your computer to query the DNS server again
